Sodium hydroxide has a very broad range of applications. In laboratory work, it is commonly used as a chemical reagent and can also function as an alkaline drying agent due to its strong moisture-absorbing properties. Caustic soda plays a vital role in the national economy and is indispensable to many industrial fields. The largest consumption occurs in the chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, followed by papermaking, aluminum and tungsten smelting, rayon and synthetic fiber production, and soap manufacturing.
In addition, substantial quantities of sodium hydroxide are used in the production of dyes, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and organic intermediates, as well as in scrap rubber recycling, metallic sodium production, water electrolysis, and the manufacture of inorganic salts such as borax, chromium salts, manganates, and phosphates. Because of its strong alkalinity, sodium hydroxide may cause water pollution, so appropriate precautions should be taken to protect plants and aquatic life.
