Product Details

1,4-Butanediol CAS#110-63-4

1,4-Butanediol (1,4-BD) is a colorless, viscous liquid derived from butane, featuring hydroxyl groups at both ends of its molecular chain. It is one of the four stable isomers of butanediol. The hydroxyl groups can react with various mono- and bifunctional reagents—for example, with dicarboxylic acids to form polyesters, with diisocyanates to form polyurethanes, or with phosgene to form polycarbonates.

1,4-Butanediol is a key chemical intermediate, and its derivatives are widely used in the production of plastics, solvents, specialty chemicals, and elastic fibers. It also serves as a building block for synthesizing polyester polyols and polyether polyols. BASF is a leading global producer of 1,4-Butanediol and its derivatives.

Product Usage of 1,4-Butanediol CAS#110-63-4

1,4-Butanediol and its derivatives are widely used in the chemical industry for the production of technical plastics, polyurethanes, solvents, specialty chemicals, and elastic fibers.

It is utilized in pharmaceutical synthesis, including the production of epothilones (a new class of anticancer drugs) and the stereoselective synthesis of (-)-Brevisamide.

The largest application of 1,4-Butanediol is in tetrahydrofuran (THF) production, which is further used to produce polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) for spandex fibers, urethane elastomers, and copolyester ethers.

1,4-Butanediol serves as a versatile intermediate and solvent in chemical processes, including gamma-butyrolactone production, crosslinking of thermoplastic urethanes, polyester plasticizers, paints and coatings, and the manufacture of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyurethane (PU).

It is also used as a plasticizer for polyesters and cellulosic materials, a carrier solvent in printing inks, a cleaning agent, an adhesive for leather, plastics, polyester laminates, and polyurethane footwear, as well as in agricultural, veterinary chemicals, and coating formulations.

Through dehydration with phosphoric acid, it yields tetrahydrofuran, an important solvent for a variety of industrial applications.
