Ammonium ferric citrate, as a food iron fortifier, is more efficiently absorbed compared to inorganic iron. In China, it is approved for use in various food products with the following guidelines: for salt and sandwich sugar, the recommended usage is 4000–8000 mg/kg; for high-iron cereals and their products (with a daily limit of 50 g), 1200–1350 mg/kg; for dairy and infant food, 400 to 800 mg/kg; for cereals and their products, 160 to 330 mg/kg; and for beverages, 70 to 140 mg/kg.
