SOLASONINE (CAS# 19121-58-5)
Solasonine is a glycoalkaloid found in various Solanum species, including S. aviculare, S. sodomeum, S. verbascifolium, and S. xanthocarpum. It crystallizes from 80% ethanol containing 4.5 molecules of water, with a melting point of 245–250°C (decomposition). The anhydrous form can be obtained using absolute methanol. It exhibits an optical rotation of [α]25D −68° (ethanol) and forms several salts, including hydrochloride (m.p. 265°C), picrate (m.p. 199–201°C), picrolonate (m.p. 230°C), and acetyl derivative (m.p. 135–138°C).
Under alkaline hydrolysis, solasonine yields solasodine along with equimolar amounts of galactose, glucose, and rhamnose. In concentrated sulfuric acid, its solution gradually develops a crimson color with brown fluorescence. It is soluble in hot ethanol and hot dioxane, slightly soluble in hot water and dilute acetic acid, and insoluble in chloroform and ether. The compound is derived from the fruit of Solanum aviculare Forst., a member of the Solanaceae family.
