1,3-Propanediol, the simplest member of the propane-1,3-diol family, is a propane molecule in which one hydrogen atom from each methyl group is replaced by a hydroxy group. It is a colorless, viscous, and water-miscible liquid with a high boiling point of 210 °C. This compound is commonly used in the synthesis of certain polymers, as a solvent, and as an antifreeze, and it also functions as a protic solvent and a metabolite.

Product Usage
As a diol, 1,3-propanediol shares many polymer applications with other low molecular weight diols, such as ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and 1,4-butanediol. Its relatively higher cost, however, limits its use to applications requiring specific performance characteristics. It serves as a raw material for the production of 1,3-dioxanes. Additionally, 1,3-propanediol-bis(4-aminobenzoate) can be used as a chain extender in polyurethane elastomers. This bisbenzoate, which can also be prepared from 1,3-dichloropropane, is further applied as a cross-linking agent in epoxy formulations and as a rubber additive.
