Product Details

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a polymer derived from vinyl pyrrolidone. Depending on the degree of polymerization, it is classified into soluble PVP and insoluble polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP). Commercial PVP products are available in four viscosity grades based on the Fikentscher K value: K-15, K-30, K-60, and K-90, corresponding to approximate molecular weights of 10,000; 40,000; 160,000; and 360,000, respectively. The K value, or relative molecular mass, is a key parameter influencing the performance characteristics of PVP.

PVP is recognized as one of the major modern pharmaceutical excipients. It is widely used in tablets and granules as a binder, in injections as a cosolvent, in capsules as a glidant, and in liquid formulations as a dispersant for colorants. It also functions as a stabilizer for enzymes and heat-sensitive drugs, a precipitating agent for poorly soluble drugs, and as a removal agent and lubricant in ophthalmic preparations. By forming complexes with toxins, drugs, and chemical substances, PVP can help reduce toxicity. Its complexes with iodine are particularly stable and exhibit effective bactericidal properties with reduced toxicity.

In industrial applications, PVP is utilized as an additive in foamed polystyrene, as a gelling agent, stabilizer, fiber treatment agent, paper processing aid, adhesive, and thickener. It can form strong complexes with certain dyes, forming the basis for its use as a dye bleaching agent.

PVP and its copolymers are also important raw materials in cosmetics, especially in hair styling products. The film formed on hair is flexible, glossy, and easy to comb, without attracting dust. Different resin grades can accommodate varying humidity and climate conditions, making PVP an essential component in hair creams, gels, and mousses. It is also used as a moisturizing agent in skincare products, as a base material for ointments, as a dispersant in hair dyes, and as a foam stabilizer. Additionally, it improves shampoo viscosity. Insoluble PVP serves as a stabilizer for beverages such as beer, fruit juice, vinegar, and wine, enhancing clarity, color, and taste.
