Products Description of Ammonium chloride (CAS#: 12125-02-9)
Ammonium chloride (commonly termed "chloramine" or "halogen sand"; chemical formula: NH₄Cl) is a colorless cubic crystal or white crystalline powder. It exhibits a salty and slightly bitter taste and is classified as an acid salt. With a relative density of 1.527, it is soluble in water, ethanol, and liquid ammonia but insoluble in acetone and ether. Its aqueous solution is weakly acidic, with acidity intensifying upon heating.
When heated to 100°C, ammonium chloride begins to volatilize significantly. At 337.8°C, it dissociates into ammonia and hydrogen chloride. Upon cooling, these gases recombine to form fine particles of ammonium chloride and a white smoke that is non-sinking and poorly soluble in water. Further heating to 350°C results in sublimation, and at 520°C, it reaches boiling.
Ammonium chloride has low moisture absorption but may absorb water and cake in humid rainy conditions. It is corrosive to ferrous metals and other metals, with particularly strong effects on copper but no corrosion on pig iron.
Ammonium chloride an be synthesized via the neutralization reaction of ammonia and hydrogen chloride or ammonia and hydrochloric acid (reaction equation: NH₃ + HCl → NH₄Cl). When heated, it decomposes into hydrogen chloride and ammonia (equation: NH₄Cl → NH₃ + HCl), with this reaction proceeding only in an open system.

Ammonium chloride is widely utilized in diverse industries, including dry batteries, storage batteries, ammonium salts, tanning, plating, medicine, photography, electrodes, and adhesives. Additionally, it serves as a nitrogen-based chemical fertilizer, with a nitrogen content of 24%–25%. Classified as a physiological acidic fertilizer, it is particularly suited for crops such as wheat, rice, corn, and rapeseed. Its application enhances fiber toughness and tension, significantly improving product quality, especially for cotton and linen crops. However, improper use may lead to adverse effects on soil and crops due to its inherent properties.
