p-Menthane-3,8-diol CAS#42822-86-6
p-Menthane-3,8-diol, also referred to as para-menthane-3,8-diol, PMD, or menthoglycol, is an active ingredient commonly used in insect repellent formulations. It has a menthol-like odor and provides a cooling sensation upon application. The compound exists in eight possible isomeric forms, and its exact composition is typically not precisely defined, being regarded as a complex mixture.
Refined OLE contains about 64% p-Menthane-3,8-diol, consisting of both cis and trans isomers. Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) has been notified under the European Biocidal Products Directive (BPD) 98/8/EC (now BPR Regulation (EU) No. 528/212) under the generic designation “p-Menthane-3,8-diol rich botanical oil,” and is currently undergoing registration with the Health and Safety Executive in the UK. It is also registered with Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency under the generic name “p-Menthane-3,8-diol and related oil of lemon eucalyptus compounds.”
