These compounds are typically supplied as mixtures containing alkyl chains with lengths ranging from C8 to C18. Among them, the C12 and C14 derivatives exhibit particularly strong biocidal activity.

Benzalkonium chloride is a cationic surfactant widely used in textile dyeing, fabric softeners, antistatic agents, emulsifiers, and conditioning agents. It also functions as a cationic detergent and is commonly utilized as a preservative in pharmaceutical preparations, including eye drops, ear drops, nasal drops, and sprays.
In addition, benzalkonium chloride is an active ingredient in various personal care products such as hand sanitizers, shampoos, deodorants, and wet wipes. It has also been studied for its effects on conjunctival epithelial cells in vitro.
