Product Details

Product Description: Sodium Carboxymethyl Starch (CAS# 9063-38-1)

Sodium starch glycolate is a white or nearly white, free-flowing powder with strong hygroscopic properties. According to PhEur 6.0, microscopic examination shows that it consists of irregularly shaped granules, including ovoid or pear-shaped particles ranging from 30–100 μm, as well as rounded granules of 10–35 μm. Occasionally, compound granules composed of 2–4 units may be observed.

The granules feature an eccentric hilum with clearly visible concentric striations. Under crossed Nicol prisms, a distinct black cross can be seen intersecting at the hilum, and small crystals are present on the granule surfaces. When in contact with water, the granules exhibit significant swelling behavior.

Product Application: Sodium Carboxymethyl Starch (CAS# 9063-38-1)

Sodium starch glycolate is widely utilized in oral pharmaceutical formulations as a disintegrant for capsules and tablets. It is suitable for use in both direct compression and wet granulation processes. The typical usage level ranges from 2% to 8%, with an optimal concentration around 4%, although in many formulations 2% is sufficient. Its disintegration mechanism is based on rapid water absorption followed by significant swelling.

Unlike many disintegrants, its performance is not adversely affected by hydrophobic excipients such as lubricants. Additionally, increasing tablet compression pressure does not significantly impact its disintegration efficiency. Sodium starch glycolate has also been studied for use as a suspending agent in pharmaceutical formulations.
