Product Description of Benzyl Acetate

Benzyl acetate is a colorless liquid with a characteristic fruity odor. Upon combustion or thermal decomposition, it releases irritating fumes. It may react with strong oxidizing agents, presenting a fire and explosion hazard. Under normal conditions of use, benzyl acetate remains stable; however, heating to decomposition can generate carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and other potentially toxic gases. At elevated temperatures (above 90°C / 194°F), its vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Therefore, exposure to heat, open flames, and other ignition sources should be avoided.

Benzyl acetate has been widely used since the early 1990s as a food additive in fruit flavorings and as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes. It is also commonly applied in soaps, detergents, and incense products, leading to widespread human exposure through ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation.
